Sick To My Stomach

I had the most bizarre experience this evening. I went out and did a long jog, but my hip is still a little on the tender side so I was taking it really easy. I went slower than I normally do to avoid injury and to make sure that I was able to finish my entire set. I wouldn’t call it a great run by any means, but there was nothing wrong with it either.

Then, when I was about two or three minutes into my cool down walk I suddenly experienced a very abrupt onset of nausea. Without warning my stomach quickly became completely tense and I felt like I was truly on the verge of losing my lunch. I did the last couple of minutes of my walk and headed home immediately.

Since then, I have drank a lot of water, eaten what I felt I could (including cinnamon on an apple because I have heard it helps with digestion), taken a hot bath, consumed a few antacids, and moved slowly in an effort to get this feeling to pass. When I first arrived back home I noticed that my face was totally drained of colour, but that didn’t last long and once I had a bit of food and water in me I did start to feel a little better. But the sensation has not gone away and I am still feeling very queasy even though it is more than five hours after I initially felt nauseated.

Ugh! I have no idea where this came from! It would be one thing if I had sensed it coming on throughout the day – or even just as I was running – but I am completely confused as to why my upset stomach developed so suddenly. I really, really hope I feel better in the morning because I have the regatta that I will be in all day tomorrow.

One much more positive (albeit totally unrelated to fitness, health, or weight loss) thing that I would like to mention is that my first article for my online column came out today! I am so excited about my position with Gumboot Books and I can’t wait to build up a really good collection of written pieces on children’s activities! This new endeavor really is a dream come true!

FOOD & BEVERAGES:

  1. G'day. I enjoy your blog :)

I guess the nausea could have been caused by any number of things. For what it's worth, I had a problem with my sacral (hip) joint for a while that regularly caused me intense nausea due to a pinched nerve. Physiotherapy helped sort me out. I hope you feel better and get to enjoy your regatta.

  4. Worth checking your blood sugars before and after?? But yes I believe ginger is good. Also do you have Bach flower rescue remedy over there. It is my hanbag essential for nausea, panic attacks or any feeling of discomfort. Available in drops spray or pastilles. Give it a try. Hope the regatta goes well ...............

  5. Nausea after a run is not uncommon, but I would monitor yourself to make sure it isn't food poisoning or something.

    Congrats on the article!

  6. Hope you are better today -
From time to time, maybe twice a year,
I get that wave of sudden nausea.
Can't say it's from one thing or another...
    It's too random!
    Get well soon!

  7. Nausea can occur suddenly if your cool down is too abrupt (body temp and heart rate drop too quickly) and this is exacerbated if you are at all dehydrated. Try to transition from one into the other more gradually, and make sure you are getting plenty of fluids before your run. It really is a nasty feeling. (I've had it happen in the past.) Sorry this occured to you. I suspect your body regulatory mechanisms are still sorting themselves out a bit, finding equilibrium is not the same process as it was 20 or 50 or 80 lbs ago...and you have come a long way, fast. I don't recall if you have had a recent check up, but it would be a good idea to see a doctor about these symptoms to make sure you don't have any underlying issues with your heart or with sodium/potassium balance. Take care please.

  8. I would be sure to keep your blood sugar checked just to stay on the safe side. I am a children's librarian, so I LOVED your article! Can't wait to see more!

  9. Don't happen to be pregnant, are you? That was my first and only symptom when I was pregnant with my first. I was running and almost felt like I was going to pass out/vomit all at once. I did it three times in a row, then found out I was pregnant.

  10. Wow! There is a lot of really good, helpful information in these comments! I'm still not sure where the nausea came from, but I am so glad it passed! (And, no, at this time of the month I can say with certainty that I am not pregnant... grin!) My doctor's check-up was only about a month or so ago, so I'm pretty certain everything is fine on all other fronts, but if it happens again I will definitely take action to investigate the cause more extensively.
